NSF (Non-Sufficient Funds)
Non-Sufficient Funds — the condition when an account lacks the money to cover a check or payment. The bank may return the item unpaid and charge an NSF fee, leaving the payee with a bounced check. (When the bank instead covers the shortfall, it is an overdraft.)

Bounced check? How to demand payment (returned check letter)
When a check you received bounces for non-sufficient funds (NSF), the standard first step is a written demand letter asking the writer to pay the face amount plus fees within a set period, often 30 days. Send it by certified mail for proof. Most states' bad-check laws then allow civil damages or small claims.
How to dispute a bank fee and get it refunded
To dispute a bank fee, call your bank within a few days, explain the charge, and ask for a one-time courtesy refund — banks routinely waive a first overdraft, NSF, or maintenance fee for customers in good standing. If the front line says no, ask for a supervisor, then escalate to a CFPB complaint.
