Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)

The number the IRS uses to identify a taxpayer — for an individual usually a Social Security Number, and for a business an Employer Identification Number (EIN). A W-9 certifies your name and TIN to a payer so they can report payments correctly; a mismatch can trigger backup withholding.
