ChexSystems
A consumer reporting agency, regulated under the FCRA, that tracks how people have managed checking and savings accounts — recording events such as unpaid negative balances, bounced checks, or accounts a bank closed for cause. Banks often pull a ChexSystems report when you apply to open a new account, and a negative record can lead to a denial. You are entitled to a free copy of your report and can dispute inaccurate entries; most negative items drop off after five years.
